I thought I'd take this week to begin talking about my favourite musicians and why! Every couple of weeks I'll be talking about another artist, so I hope you enjoy these little snippets into my brain.
I grew up listening to a lot of music but I didn't have any particular favourite bands or artists, I knew certain ones by name, such as Elvis, Michael Jackson and Shirley Bassey to name a few, but I only knew of them through my mum playing them while growing up. I never went out of my way to find out who sang a song I liked and I put that down to being young and not really caring, however music was a really big part of mine and my families lives as my mum was a cabaret singer for most of my childhood.
However, when I was around 12 years old (2008), a friend introduced me to P!nk and from then on music started to become an even bigger part of my life. She was the first artist I completely fell in love with and she was first artist I ever went out of my way to acquire albums for!
My friend and I would dance in her back garden to not only P!nk but also Taylor Swift, Mika and even Linkin Park (little did I know this was my first taste of "emo" or rock, that would later consume my life - but more on that in the future).
I begged my mum for a music player and for Christmas she got me an MP4 player that I immediately put all of P!nks music on to. Every night for years I went to bed with music playing and more often than not it was P!nk I was listening to! Through her songs I started to learn how to hear music differently and I even learnt how to harmonise (which my mum had tried to teach me before but I couldn't figure it out). I remember also downloading a "P!nk's Funniest Moments" video onto the MP4 player and watching it over and over again!
Discovering P!nk is probably the main reason I ended up wanting to pursue a career in music, as I aspired to be a strong, badass women in the industry and she was the first woman I was able to look up to in that respect. I remember during her Funhouse tour (2010/2011ish I'm unsure) I hung out of my bedroom window to hear her play in Hampden Park and vowing the next time she came to Scotland I'd go see her. Little did I know she wouldn't come back till 2019! And true to my word I got to finally see her in Hampden Park and sing my little heart out to the songs I'd loved for over a decade!
A lot of things had happened in the years before I'd seen her live, so it was quite emotional when I finally did and it was a really wonderful full circle moment for me. She really didn't disappoint either, she was absolutely incredible and I cannot wait to go see her again!
